In my 25 years of medical practice, I have diagnosed and supported many patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The number of patients is so high that sometimes I feel like I did not choose autism, but God has rather chosen me for autism.
I chose the term ‘supported’ instead of ‘treated’ because Autism is not an illness. Yes!
An autistic person is not diseased. Then what is it?
Being autistic means a person’s brain works differently from other people. So, autism is not an ailment that occurs at a later phase of life. It is something people are born with. The signs of being autistic might be noticed when a child is 18 months old.
Autism is a disorder that has been sown since fetal life. Today, I will discuss a clinically observed type of autism that arises due to a particular cause.
A little confused?
Well, you will be more alarmed if I add that the cause is nothing but medical science. Yes, such an occurrence exists, and we term it “iatrogenic.” According to the reports, 1 in 88 people can have such a condition.
WHAT IS IATROGENIC?
‘Iatrogenesis’ is the reason for disease, a harmful complication, or ill effects derived from medical activity, error, intervention, diagnosis, or negligence. The term was first used in 1924. It was later introduced by Evan Illich in 1976 to sociology to allege that industrialization in societies is impairing the quality of life by over-medicalizing it.
Simply put, iatrogenic conditions result from medical errors, which can also be a wrong therapy or prescribing the wrong drug. And unfortunately, I am someone who came across one such patient whose autism was caused iatrogenically.
A GLIMPSE OF A CASE OF IATROGENIC AUTISM
The case was of a 4.5-year-old child. The parents came with their hyperactive baby boy, shouting, grousing, and disturbing parents by not letting them talk. He also had excessive thirst and appetite, and I found him jumping a lot without understanding that it could injure him.
His parents also told me that he starts laughing for no reason, bites himself, teases children, passes stool in a standing position, denies eating new things, throws things around, repeats activities or sentences all the time, salivates during sleep, and does not follow commands.
Well, that was not anything unusual. Most autistic patients have that kind of conduct. But what was rare was the reason for the occurrence of autism in the child. As I mentioned earlier, this was a case of iatrogenic Autism.
When I dived deeper into the diagnosis, I had the most shocking revelation of the occurrence. When the mother was pregnant, she was given human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) hormone injections on alternate days along with other medications. HCG or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin injections are hormonal injections used as fertility treatment. It mimics the luteinizing hormone (LH), stimulating ovulation and egg release to aid conception. It is also commonly used in IVF treatments.
HCG injections stimulate the ovaries to produce follicles containing an egg and to release the egg from the ovary. When an injection is administered, ovulation can typically occur approximately 24 to 36 hours later, helping in the duration of intercourse or retrieval.
But in this case, since the conception was normal, those injections were not necessary at all. The mother did not even have any history of abortion, and therefore, it was unnecessary to suggest those injections to hold the pregnancy.
ARE HCG INJECTIONS TO BLAME FOR IATROGENIC AUTISM?
In this case, YES!
Pregnant women with high or low levels of HCG hormones can face an increased risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome. Also, when exposed to higher HCG levels, the fetus increases the risk of autism.
IATROGENIC AUTISM VS HOMEOPATHY
When I took up this case of autism, this was not only autism versus homeopathy. However, it was the misappropriation of medical science versus the supremacy of homeopathy as a therapy to support and alleviate the percentage of autism.
